How to Determine Your Partner’s Ring Size for a Surprise Proposal
Selecting the perfect engagement ring is an exciting process, but determining your partner’s ring size—especially when planning a surprise proposal—can feel challenging. Fortunately, with our advice, you can confidently make the right choice.
First, let’s look at what makes the ideal fit. The ring should slip on smoothly, feel comfortable, and have slight resistance as it’s taken off over the knuckle. Without this bit of resistance, there’s a risk the ring could come off too easily.
While we always recommend getting sized professionally, we know this isn’t always possible when you’re trying to keep the proposal a secret. So, here are some useful tips to help you make an educated guess:
Order a Complimentary Ring Sizing Kit
Our top suggestion is to use one of our free ring sizing kits. With all the tools and guidance you need, you can measure your partner’s ring size from the comfort of your home, giving you the confidence to select the perfect fit. Just remember, the dominant hand is often slightly larger, so be sure to measure the left ring finger. Simply request one of our free ring sizers here, or get in touch via email.
Look For Size Markings Inside Their Rings
Take a discreet peek at your partner’s jewellery collection and inspect the inside of any rings for hallmarks or size stamps. These are usually indicated by a number or letter (for example, "M" or "52"). If you’re unsure, TMC uses standard Australian ring sizing. Our international sizing chart is also available to help you convert measurements no matter where you’re located.
Try Their Rings On Your Own Fingers
Slip one of their rings onto your finger and note where it sits. If you attend a one-on-one consultation, one of our expert consultants can measure that point on your finger for an approximate size estimation. Whilst this method is a little less accurate, it will still give a rough indication of your partner's ring size.
Bring Their Ring To A Jeweller Or Consultation
If you can, find a ring your partner wears frequently on their left hand and bring it to your jeweller or to a consultation for a professional size measurement. While there might be slight differences depending on which finger the ring is usually worn on, it will still offer a close estimate. If you can’t take the ring with you, take a photo of it next to a ruler. Measuring the inner circumference from edge to edge will give you an accurate size to work from.
Ask Them Discreetly
With a little creativity, you could pretend you’re buying a ring for a family member, friend, or even yourself and casually ask your partner what ring size they are for reference. Be sure to take note.
While we have a few recommendations on how to make an educated guess, we know sometimes it’s just not possible to get it perfect. If when you first receive your ring, it mostly fits but you’re concerned it might be a little too loose or a little too tight, we recommend wearing it for at least a week before deciding whether or not to resize it. This is because our fingers can fluctuate in size, due to temperature, weather, hormones and even exercise.
If after a week, your ring is not the correct size, we provide one complimentary resize, within the first 6 months of purchase, inclusive of 4 sizes up and 4 sizes down. Simply book your ring drop-off appointment if you're based in Brisbane or get in touch with our friendly team via email and we can support you in sending your ring back to us for your complimentary re-sizing. We’re here for you and your journey.
