Prongs: Which Type Should You Choose?

Designed to safely secure your stone while optimising its appearance and style, basket and cathedral settings rely on the use of prongs to elegantly showcase your divine cultured gemstone, and keep it in place. These very popular choices embody a modern and minimalistic style with typically 4-6  prongs holding the stone in place.

The purpose of these prongs is to provide your beautiful dream ring with the structural integrity to withstand a lifetime of love. Despite how it may visually appear, your choice of the number of prongs does not concern the structural integrity of the ring - rather the width of the prong.

Prongs work by extending up from one central point on the base of the band and are linked by a metal gallery rail that sits horizontally around the stone for extra structural integrity, forming a basket. At The Moissanite Company, our prongs are crafted at a 1.4mm width, tapering to 1.2mm at the point of the prong - providing durability and longevity of every piece, no matter the carat size. Our prongs then typically extend 1.0 - 1.5mm onto the face of the gemstone, however, this does differ depending on the carat weight of the stone. Each piece is individually examined by our expert jewellers who then make a calculated decision to determine the perfect balance between structural integrity and aesthetics of your dream ring.

Here at The Moissanite Company, we offer our pear, round and marquise shaped stones with a choice of two alternative prong settings to suit your taste, ranging from four to six prongs depending on the shape.

As seen below, the number of prongs you select is entirely your choice, and each option can bring a different look and feel to your ring.
