What’s the Difference Between White Gold & Platinum?
Often, most people know what colour metal they like for their jewellery: silver toned, yellow gold toned, or rose gold toned.
But people wanting a white metal for their engagement ring often get confused due to the visual similarity between white gold, and platinum. So, what is the difference between white gold and platinum? Which should you choose for your engagement ring?
White gold and platinum are two different types of metal.
Gold is graded in karats (not to be confused with carats), which is a unit measuring the percentage of pure gold in your jewellery. Pure gold (24K) on its own is too soft for everyday jewellery and shows scratches and dents easily. This is why other metals like copper, palladium and zinc are mixed with gold to create more usable grades of gold that are stronger and more durable - most commonly 18K, 14K and 9K. At The Moissanite Company, we offer gold in 2 different grades: 18K and 14K.
White gold requires plating with rhodium to achieve its bright, shiny finish, and needs to be re-plated ideally once per year. Finished white gold is bright and white in tone and is more affordable in price.
Platinum is a naturally white metal that requires less mixing with other metals, and is therefore more pure, more dense and more expensive than gold. Although platinum is an incredibly durable metal, it is actually more susceptible to scratching and denting, and should be regularly polished and cleaned professionally to maintain its smooth appearance.
It has a slightly more grey hue than white gold, and slightly more expensive in cost.
When it comes to making your choice, there is no right or wrong answer - the best metal is the one you love the most.
